CHAPTER 06 — BEYOND THE BATHROOM
Bathrooms are where I concentrate my work, but they aren’t the only rooms I’ve renovated. Over about 15 years of residential renovations I’ve also worked on kitchens, laundries, floors and interior finishes. If your bathroom project sits alongside other changes in the house, it’s worth mentioning when we talk.
ALSO WITHIN MY EXPERIENCE
Kitchen renovations
Laundry renovations
Flooring installation
Interior finishing work
The main focus remains bathroom renovations in Malvern and surrounding Melbourne suburbs.

SAME LAYERS, DIFFERENT ROOMS
The principle behind my bathroom work applies everywhere in a house: the visible finish doesn’t tell you the whole story. A kitchen splashback, a laundry floor or a patched wall all depend on what’s underneath. I look at the existing conditions first, then explain what the work involves.
A
Like bathrooms, these are working rooms with tiled surfaces, wet areas and services in the walls. I handle the renovation work itself, from preparation through to tiling and finishing.
B
A new floor is only as level and stable as the surface below it. Checking that surface, and preparing it properly, is part of the job before any flooring goes down.
C
Plasterboard, plastering and finishing often extend beyond the bathroom door. See plasterboard, plastering and interior finishing for how I approach it.
A NOTE ON SERVICES
Kitchens and laundries usually involve water, drainage and power. Appropriately licensed specialists complete that work where it’s required, and I may coordinate their involvement in your renovation. I don’t provide a 24-hour emergency plumbing or electrical service. More detail is on the plumbing, electrical and regulated work page.
WHY BATHROOMS STAY THE FOCUS
Complete bathroom renovations are where I put most of my time, so I don’t actively promote this other work. But when you’re already planning a bathroom, it can make sense to talk about the laundry next door or the hallway floor at the same time. During the on-site assessment I can look at those areas too and tell you honestly what’s involved.
Every quote depends on the existing conditions, materials, preparation and scope, so I don’t give fixed prices without seeing the property.
WORTH NOTING BEFOREHAND
— Which other rooms you’re considering
— What bothers you about them now
— Any signs of wear, movement or damp
— Whether the work could follow the bathroom
